If your vehicle’s licence disc has expired, you’re not immediately breaking the law — but the clock is running. Here’s what actually happens, and what it costs to fix.
You get a 21-day grace period
South African law gives you 21 days from your licence disc’s expiry date before you’re considered unlicensed. During this grace period, you can renew as normal at the standard fee, with no arrears or penalties added.
This grace period is calculated from the expiry date printed on your disc, not the date you notice it’s expired — so don’t wait until day 20 to start the process.
After the grace period: arrears and penalties
Once the 21 days are up, two things get added to your renewal cost:
- Arrears — a pro-rata portion of the annual licence fee for each month the vehicle was unlicensed (annual fee ÷ 12 × months overdue).
- A monthly penalty — typically one-tenth of the annual fee for every month you’re late, capped once it reaches the full annual fee amount.
The longer it’s left, the more expensive it gets. There’s no way around this once the grace period has passed — it’s set by the traffic department, not by whoever processes your renewal.
Can you still drive with an expired disc?
Driving with an expired licence disc is an offence, and traffic officers can issue a fine even within the “grace period” in some circumstances — the 21-day allowance is about avoiding renewal penalties, not a guarantee against being stopped. The safest approach is to renew as soon as you’re able to.
What if I never received a renewal notice?
Not receiving your renewal notice in the post doesn’t extend your grace period or waive penalties — the licence disc itself shows the expiry date, and you’re responsible for renewing on time regardless of whether a notice arrived.
How to renew an expired licence disc
- Get a clear photo of your current (expired) licence disc and a copy of your ID ready.
- Submit these online — you don’t need to queue at a traffic department in person to start the process.
- Review your quote, which will include any arrears and penalties calculated for your specific vehicle and how long it’s been overdue.
- Once approved and paid, the renewal is processed and your new disc is couriered to you.
The sooner you start, the less it costs. If your disc has already lapsed, don’t wait for a “better time” — every additional month adds to the bill.
